The Basics
Model Aircraft Motors come in a variety of types and can be found in all sorts of aircraft. The type you choose depends on the size of your aircraft, the sound you want it to make, and the noise limitations of your flying area.
2-Cycle Engines
The most common type of model aircraft engine is the "two-cycle" or glow plug engine. These are very simple, inexpensive, powerful and reliable. They are often used in speed or ducted fan aircraft that depend on high RPM to generate thrust.
4-Cycle Engines
In recent years, a new class of "4-cycle" or gas engine has become quite popular in the RC model world. These are very quiet and produce a nice sound.
Battery Power
Electric motors are typically powered by 6 or 12 volt NiCad batteries. These are lightweight and rechargeable quickly. They may require a number of cells, depending on the motor.
Timing
Another consideration in the design of a motor is its "timing." This is where the field rotation is reversed so that the motor draws less current under no load than under a heavy load (usually the propeller).
Brushes and Comm
The brushes on a model engine draw a lot of current and need a good seal for proper operation. A brushed motor has to be regularly cleaned and the brushes need to be replaced if they begin to wear out.
